Box Score Throggs Neck, NY – In the home opener of the 2004-05 season, the duo from Alabama, juniors
Gerard Danzy (Monroeville, Ala./Hillcrest) (Monroeville, AL/Hillcrest) and
Robert Benton (Montgomery, Ala./G.W. Carver) (Montgomery, AL/G.W. Carver) both had outstanding games in their debut for the Privateers. However, behind 20 points from senior forward
Daryl France (Ozone Park, NY/Van Buren), the Beavers of City College of New York picked up their second straight win 74-69 in Men’s Basketball action in Throggs Neck Tuesday night.
The Beavers came out strong in the first half, picking up the early lead. However, the Privateers battled back behind nine first half points from forward
Zishaan Raymond (Jenkintown, Pa./Jekintown) (Jenkintown, PA/Jenkintown) who nailed two huge three pointers to put Maritime up at the half 35-29. Senior guard
Marc Lashley (Queens, N.Y./Holy Cross) (Queens, NY/Holy Cross) and junior forward
Jonathan Holler (N. Tonawanda, N.Y./Cardinal O'Hara) (N. Tonawanada, NY/Cardinal O’Hara) both added seven points each in the first.
The Beavers then opened up the second half on fire quickly depleting the Privateer lead and stopping Maritime from scoring a point for almost four minutes. Yet again, Maritime was able to recover and held a ten point with about eight minutes left in the game. Then France and company went on a 13 point run, a run that the Beavers never looked back from. Senior guard Gary Brown (Blauvelt, NY/Tappan Zee) hit a tricky bank shot with 1:14 left to bring the Privateers to within three points, 69-66. However, the Beavers were able to control the rest of the game as they did not miss from the free throw line, as the Privateers saw their chances at an upset slip away.
Maritime had five players finish in double digits led by Danzy with 13, Benton with 12, Holler and Lashley had eleven a piece and Browne rounded things out with ten points in the loss. Sophomore forward Robert Barker (Brownsville, NY/LaSalle Academy) had 17 points and a team high nine rebounds for CCNY.
The Privateers drop their third straight falling to 0-3 on the year, and will return to action after the Holiday break on Monday the 29th in a 8pm tip-off against the Bridges of Brooklyn College.
